Creatures - Great and Small Encaustic Mixed Media

People hold great connections to animals whether large or small and the bonding relationships between them are often very profound. I created this collection of animals, both wild and domestic because of my love and fascination with the magnificent creatures that I often connect with.

The wild animals in this collection are ones that I either come upon while out hiking or they have graced me with their presence at my studio and home which is located within walking distance of both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina in the United States. The domesticated and farm animals featured are ones that either I or my friends have personal connections to. All have a story to tell.

This collection of original mixed media encaustic fine art is created with encaustic wax, paint, pigments, and other media layered together on a custom hand-made and painted sustainable birch wood cradled panel.

This process creates an original encaustic mixed media fine artwork that is extremely archival, nonreproducible, and one that gives depth to the painting with a dream-like effect.

All of my encaustic works arrive ready to hang in custom-made solid wood floating frames that are finished to enhance the artwork. Each artwork is sealed for protection on the frame back and also contains information about the artwork's inspiration, artist statement, and artist's signature.

What is Encaustic?

Encaustic is a Greek word that means “to heat or burn-in.” It is one of the oldest art forms dating back to the 5th Century B.C. The material of encaustic consists of natural beeswax and damar resin, which is crystallized tree sap. Heat is used throughout the process to melt the beeswax, fusing the layers of wax and any media combined with it.
